Ocean Township is a community located in the central part of eastern Monmouth County with an estimated population of approximately 27,200 and covering an area of approximately 11 square miles. Ocean Township was incorporated in 1849 from a portion of Shrewsbury Township and was originally almost four times a large as it is today. Over the years Long Branch, Eatontown, Asbury Park, Interlaken, Loch Arbour, Deal, Neptune Township, Allenhurst, Monmouth Beach and Sea Bright were all formed from portions of Ocean Township. The earliest settlers to the area were believed to have migrated from Rhode Island.
Ocean Township has a number of distinct areas which include Oakhurst, West Allenhurst, Wanamassa, Colonial Terrace, Shadowlawn Manor, Deal Park, West Deal and Wayside. The housing is primarily single family homes, but there are a number of condominium communities and a few age restricted active adult communities, most of which are located west of Highway 35. The Township offers a diverse mix of architectural styles running through all price ranges. Ocean Township housing is considered affordable by many, with the average price of a home being about 20% less than the average for Monmouth County.
The location is convenient for commuting, shopping and recreation. Local area beaches are just minutes away, as are Route 35 shopping malls and outlets. For commuters, both Allenhurst and Elberon train stations are nearby and there is easy access to the Garden State Parkway and Routes 18 and 195.
